Full Capacity Protocol at LUH has lead to cancellation of one third of surgeries

A consultant surgeon at Letterkenny University Hospital has said the continued trolley crisis is leading to more and more surgeries being cancelled at the hospital.

Peter O’Rourke says every time the full capacity protocol is implemented at the hospital all non-life threatening surgeries are immediately cancelled.

In 2016 alone the protocol was implemented on 103 occasions which Mr. O’Rourke says led to a third of surgeries being cancelled.

Latest figures from the INMO show there are 22 people waiting on trolleys at Letterkenny University Hospital today with a further seven on trolleys in Sligo.

According to Mr. O’Rourke these cancellations effect the quality of life for those on surgery waiting lists.
