Calls for diabetes equipment to be included in Long Term Illness scheme

Sligo County Council has called for a piece of medical equipment that monitors glucose levels in children with diabetes to be included for funding on the Long Term Illness Scheme.

The sensors can monitor glucose levels through clothing, meaning children not having to be woken up during the night to take blood samples from them.

Fine Gael Councillor Dara Mulvey, who made the proposal, says the monitors last about two weeks and cost €60, which can be costly for some families.

However, he says a major benefit of the equipment is that it can scan through clothing.
