Donegal Town Basketball Club Notes

This is the club’s busy time now for the next few months as we enter the business side of the North West Regional Leagues. We have 4 teams in action still as our u18 Girls have finished their games and our Ladies team failed to stay in the league with not enough available players to compete which is a terrible shame after the heights the ladies reached over the last 10 years. But onwards and upwards as we have a few teams competing at the right end of the league tables. We are also in the process of starting up our National School 3 v 3 leagues and local u12 club league while we have adult basketball on Friday nights at 8.30 where we hope to resurrect out Senior Teams. So anyone looking to get involved come along.

We have also got our u8s and u10s back into our regular Friday slot of 5.30 to 6.30pm and we ask all Parents to pay €4 nightly or €30 for the term. All Kids must sign in at the door every night.

Blaze Rockets 10  Donegal Town  34.

A tight first quarter from both sides as Blaze came out all guns blazing at the start, but Donegal’s defense was excellent. Scores were hard to come by for both teams as the first quarter ended 4-2 in Donegals favour. 2nd quarter was a different tale as Donegal moved the ball quickly as Daniel Quinn and Niall Prendiville got the scoreboard moving and Donegal ended the 2nd quarter 16-4 up. 3rd quarter again was a tight affair with Callum Dunnion, Jack Smith, James Connolly showing  that Donegal’s squad can all contribute to the teamwith great contributions. Thed last quarter they showed that as they ran in 18pts to win by 34-10.
It was a great performance from all 12 players with our defense looking very good but Daniel Quinn was outstanding with 14 pts and numerous rebounds and deserves the MVP.

Blaze Jets 17 Donegal Town 36.

Donegal a hour later faced the Jets in another good game. Donegal started the first quarter with their best basketball of the year as  they moved the ball and ran a great fast break to lead 16-1. 2nd and 3rd quarters the Jets got back into the game with some very good play themselves. Donegal still were in control and players like Morgan Sweeney, Joe Hearty and Dara Griffin started to get right into the game but Jets had pulled it back to 24-15 at the end of 3rd quarter, Donegal once again lead by Leo, Daniel, Niall, Eoghan and Jake upped their game and played great team basketball to win the  last quarter 18-2 and win 36-17.
Once again all the boys put in a great team effort and now have won 6 game in row which puts us into contention for the  NW Regional league.. MVP was Leo McGowan.

Sligo All Stars  29  Donegal Town 51.

Donegal Town traveled to the Mercy Hall in Sligo to play a Allstar team that beat Donegal first game of the season by 6. The difference in Donegal has been massive with all the lads training twice a week and putting in a real effort and all that showed as the beat Sligo by 21pts. There was a lot of excellent play as Donegal started well but All Stars came back at them . Jake Graham though was like a rock in defense and was dominating the boards. A  tight first quarter ended 4-6 in Donegal’s favor.  The 2nd quarter was the same as both teams played at a high tempo but Donegal were converting their chances and led at half time 18-11. The 3rd quarter was Donegal’s as they played some great stuff as Eoghan McPartland, Jake Graham, James Connolly and Oisin Mogan racked up 16pts to lead 34-12.. The last quarter was a show as both teams put out strong fives and went at each other in end to end basketball. It was a joy to watch these U12s boys put on such a display at such a young age. The last quarter finished 17 pts each, which meant Donegal finished winning 51-29.
Once again it was a real team effort, and the lads were delighted with their win. Jake Graham was outstanding winning loads of rebounds and scoring 10pts but MVP goes to Eoghan McPartland who played great also scoring 17pts.

Sligo All Stars 47  Donegal Town BC 57

Our u16 Girls season is finally kicking into gear as they played only their second league game of the season last Sunday in the Mercy Sligo. Our girls started the game very well racing ahead 27-5  a lead they would not relinquish as they got  a deserved  win over the big Sligo Club.  Donegal started very organised and looked to move the ball fast at every opportunity while the defense was excellent and gave plenty of extra chances. All stars are no mugs and they got themselves back into the game with a strong second quarter to leave the half time score 35-25 to the visitors.  Orla Carbery, Sophie Carr and Ellie Muldoon were the backbone of the win with great defensive displays with Captain Andrea Furey very strong around the basket hitting a wonderful 21 points.  A strong third quarter 16-3 win put the game to bed with all of the Donegal squad contributing to the win.  They play the return game at home tonight Thursday 9th at 8pm and it promises to be a great game so come along and show your support. MVP Andrea Furey.
