Harkin: ‘Volunteering brings us back to the roots of our communities’

For every euro invested in volunteers, the return is between five and eight euro.

That’s according to North West MEP Marian Harkin speaking at a civic reception hosted by Sligo County Council yesterday evening to mark Sligo’s selection as the 2017 European Capital of Volunteering.

Council Director of Services Bartley Gavin, who was MC for the event in IT Sligo, said that while volunteers go about their work with discretion and modesty, the reception was an opportunity to publicly applaud their efforts.

Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan was among a sold-out audience who attended a gala concert afterwards.

Ms Harkin, who has constantly promoted volunteering as a member of the European Parliament, told Ocean FM News what she believes lies at it’s heart.
