IT Sligo safely negotiate first Sigerson Cup hurdle

IT Sligo are safely through to the first round proper of the Sigerson Cup.

Padraig McGourty’s side overcame the first half sending-off of Roscommon’s Philip Neilan for two bookable offences, to beat GMIT by nine points at Tuam Stadium.

First half goals from Mayo’s Bryan Walsh and James Shaughnessy had the Sligo college 2-5 to 1-6 ahead by the break.

And they held their opponents to just a further 1-1 in the second half, as they powered home with the wind at their backs.

Bundoran’s Jamie Brennan netted a third IT Sligo goal – set up by Killybegs man Eoghan Ban Gallagher – to seal the victory, while Four Masters’ Kevin McBrearty, Bunninadden’s Daniel Cafferkey, Coolaney/Mullinabreena’s Raymond Connolly and Milford’s Cathal McGettigan were also on the scoresheet.

Calry/St Joseph’s Darragh McConnon captained the IT Sligo team from full-back, while Naomh Brid’s Ross Gallagher, Aodh Ruadh’s Eamonn McGrath and Kilcar’s Andrew McClean also started for the Sligo side.

Geevagh’s Jody O’Reilly and Ballinamore’s Dean McGovern came off the bench as second half substitutes.

IT Sligo will now face UCD in the first round proper, while Garda College’s 0-8 to 0-3 defeat of Cork IT means they will be away to Martin McHugh’s UUJ in round 1.
