Shock, confusion among ratepayers in Leitrim

Ratepayers in Leitrim have been shocked and confused after receiving notice of their property valuations.

The valuations, set by the National Valuations Office, are used to calculate the rates to be paid for the year ahead.

Notices of property valuations are expected to be sent out soon in counties Sligo and Donegal.

Some business owners in Manorhamilton in County Leitrim had fears at the weekend their rates had gone up between three and ten times.

But council Cathaoirleach Cllr Mary Bohan says some people may have been misreading their valuation notices, thinking the valution figure was the figure for rates payable.

However, where valuations have gone up, rates will also increase but not, as Cllr Bohan explained, by the massive amounts initially feared.

She told Ocean FM News the valuation must be multiplied by 0.23 to get the figure for rates payable.
