TD accuses HSE of ‘wild allegations’



A west of Ireland TD is hitting out at the HSE today for comments accusing families of leaving loved ones in hospital to protect their inheritance.

Today’s Irish Times claims that families are leaving their elderly relatives in hospital beds rather than sending them to a nursing home – to protect their inheritance.

Under the Fair Deal scheme – a patients assets are used to fund a nursing home place.

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice says the comments by a HSE official are ‘wild allegations’ targeted at the farming community in particular.

He says has accused the organisation of trying to divert attention from the real issue here which he says is the lack of adequate homecare packages:
