Calls for N59 upgrade from Dromore West to Mayo border

Two West Sligo councillors believe a new road is needed on the N59 between Dromore West and the Mayo border.

Independent councillors Joe Queenan and Michael Clarke raised the issue at a meeting of the Ballymote-Tubbercurry Municipal District this week.

They say that the road is built on poor bog land and is deteriorating at a rapid rate causing major problems for drivers.

The roads department of the council confirmed that funding will be sought from Transport Infrastructure Ireland to redesign the road.

In the interim they say there is over one hundred thousand euro allocated for maintenance on the road.

Speaking to Ocean FM councillor Queenan said maintenance works on the present stretch of road would only be a waste of money.
