Leitrim IFA officer questions use of EU funding for forestry

There has been another call for a stop to be put to certain European funding being used to support the planting of forestry in County Leitrim.

Leitrim IFA treasurer Maureen Murray says it’s wrong that people can sell their land for forestry to speculators and still keep their payments under the Common Agricultural policy.

Last week, Leitrim Fianna Fail Councillor Justin Warnock called on the council to ask EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Phil Hogan if it was EU policy to financially support what he described as ‘the land grab’ by forestry companies and their agents now taking place in Leitrim.

Speak to Ocean FM, Maureen Murray says it’s now up to the constituency’s TDs to rein in what she says is an out-of-control situation.
