Sligo to rely on existing resources to fund volunteering year projects

Sligo is going to be relying on existing resources and co-operation from volunteer groups as it takes on the mantle of European Capital of Volunteering for 2017.

Following a presentation to Sligo County Council on what the title means for Sligo and what to expect in the year ahead Sinn Fein councillor Sean McManus questioned what resources were available to fund the year’s events.

CEO Ciaran Hayes informed councillors that resources will come from outside sources, the council and the same sources as those which funded the recent Fleadh Ceoil in Sligo.

The year long celebrations will be launched with a gala event in Knocknarea Arena at IT Sligo on the 27th of January.

Speaking to Ocean FM project manager for that event Margaret McConnell says efforts are being made to keep the cost of the year down as much as possible
