Sligo All-Stars through to President’s Cup final

Sligo All-Stars will play in this year’s President’s Cup final at the end of January after a convincing 85-63 defeat of Team Kilkenny at Cork’s Neptune Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Inspired by a commanding display from Ronan McGarrity, the All-Stars enjoyed a bright start and were 15 points up, 28-13, by the end of the first quarter.

Team Kilkenny reduced the deficit to 11 by half-time, 41-30, and the gap was down to just eight points, 58-50, by the end of the third quarter, as the Sligo side, missing key players Aidan O’Shea (holidays) and Cian Lally (injury) tired a little after the long journey south the evening before.

But McGarrity, American Kaylim Noel and U18 international Oisin O’Reilly helped lift the side once again for a devastating final quarter that the All-Stars won by 27 points to 13 to take the win.

They will now face favourites Neptune in the final, likely to be played on January 28, after the semi-final hosts beat Kestrels 92-78 on Friday evening.

Before that, the All-Stars have two home games in the league, starting with next Saturday’s game against Dublin Lions at the Mercy College Sports Centre.
