Charity call for footballers to take part in Castleconnor match on December 27

Castleconnor GAA Club will host their fourth annual benefit match this festive season on Tuesday, December 27. This year all proceeds will go to Western Care Association and after this event the club hope to bring the amount raised for local charities from various events in these past four years to over €20,000. ‘Be a Player for Western Care’ will take place at St. Brendan’s GAA Park, Castleconnor, with player registration open from 12 noon, kick-off at 1.30pm – the suggested donation for playing is €20. As always this will be a fun day out for all the family with a mixture of youth and experienced players in action – the event is open to people of all ages and abilities and refreshments for all after in the community centre.  That evening the GAA Club will hold their Annual Awards night in Muddy Burns.
The inaugural charity match took place in December 2013 and €5,305 was raised for rehabilitation therapy for a member of the Morrisroe family who had been involved in a serious accident.  Over 100 footballers registered to play in the event.  In the following two years Sligo Dialysis Patient Comfort Fund and the Cystic Fibrosis Association Sligo were the beneficiaries.

The funds raised from his year’s event will go to Western Care Association’s Beehive and Scannan Resource Centres, Ballina.  Western Care Association provides services and supports to Mayo people with intellectual and associated disabilities throughout the county.  In excess of twenty services users from the greater Ballina and west Sligo region attend both Resource Centres and are supported in social, educational, recreational and employment roles in the community.  At Scannan the emphasis is on film and art projects and one of the more high profile activities over the last number of years had been the making of short films including the hugely successful and critically acclaimed ‘Silent Moves’ which featured on Nationwide and recently won the very prestigious Irish Times Book of the Year prize.

So if you are looking for a fun way of running of the turkey and excesses of the Christmas season make your way to St. Brendan’s GAA Park, Castleconnor before 1.30pm on Tuesday, December 27th and become A Player for Western Care!   Further details from pro.castleconnor.sligo@gaa.ie
