Man dies following landslide in Ballyfarnon



Gardai in Ballymote are heading the investigation into the death of a man who died following a landslide in the Gleann/Ballyfarnon area last night.

A major search and rescue operation was launched at around 7pm before the man’s body was recovered at around 2am.

It’s understood the man who was in his 30s was working on a windfarm in the Gleann area in county Sligo when the landslide happened at around half past six.

The emergency services arrived at the scene and were assisted by the Sligo Mountain rescue in recovering the man whose body was found at around 2am.

It was removed to Sligo University Hospital.

The man was living in county Leitrim but is not believed to be from the local area.

Super-intendent at Ballymote Garda Station Padraic Burke has confirmed that they are leading the investigation in Ballymote and that a separate investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Authority.

The area borders counties Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim.
