A Sligo councillor is calling not only for water charges to be returned to those who paid but also that those who pay for private water schemes in rural areas also be compensated.
Independent Councillor Michael Clarke proposed at yesterday’s meeting of Sligo County Council that it write to the Oireachtas committee on water charges seeking the return of such money and compensation.
He says it will cost too much to recover water charges that are due and the fairest thing is to return the money to those who have paid.
Asked if he was proposing that people on private schemes, such as group schemes, should also be paid money, this was his response:
