Sligo-Leitrim League Weekend Round-Up

Strand Celtic welcomed Glenview Stars to the sea side on Friday night for their encounter in The Great Southern Hotel Sligo Super League. This was perhaps the best display in recent times by Strand Celtic with the Silver fox Gareth Kelly claiming the match ball hitting a superb hat trick his third goal a volley from inside his own half has to be a contender for the goal of the season. Two goals from Mark Mc Goldrick and one apiece from Ryan Mc Manus and Gary Cadden giving Strand their second biggest win of the season. Glenview Stars despite shipping seven goals fought the good fight and the Big Man Gino O Boyle pulled a goal back for Glenview but the Stars shone brightest for Strand.

Carbury continue their rise with an impressive but hard fought battle at home to a very young and talented Ballisodare United. Carbury took the lead after seven minutes through the very impressive Keith Carthy and Ballisodare were level five minutes later courtesy of a Johnathan Lynch own goal. On sixteen minutes Christopher Kelly restored Cadburys lead to leave them a goal up at the interval. The second half was nip and tuck but Carbury should have wrapped the game up when referee Tomas Oates awarded a penalty with fourteen minutes remaining on the clock. Christopher Kelly stepped up to the mark but unfortunately his effort was wide of the mark and Ballisodare were still in with a shout. However, six minutes from time Gary Finan netted the third and decisive goal that gave Carbury those three vital points that puts them top of the table.

Last season’s Champions Boyle Celtic were in fine form at home to Calry Bohs in Celtic Park. Two goals each here for Luca Roddy and Daniel Browne with Mick Corrigan and Aaron Calpin rounding off a good days work for Boyle. The hitman Eoin Nicholson and current international Conor Griffin both netted a goal each for Bohs who in fairness were short some first team players for this encounter.

Aughanagh Celtic took all three points away to Yeats United at the Danny Mc Ginley Park Carney winning by the odd goal in five. Donal Gallagher and John Hestor both netted for the Yeats Men. While Dermot Beggan bagged two superb goals for Aughanagh and Thomas Cryan cracking home a glorious third to earn three fantastic points.

St Johns played Manor Rangers on the Astro at Cleveragh and shared the spoils in a six goal thriller. Malachy Spratt gave St John’s the lead with Andrea Sabin levelling matters Paddy Woulfe than put Manor ahead only for David Heffernan to equalise just before half time. The second half seen Manor again take the lead with the elusive Seamus Ryder scoring and it looked good enough to take all three points but two minutes into injury time up stepped Conor Brennan to crack home a brilliant equaliser that insured a share of the spoils in a great game well played by both sides.

The Andrew Mullen Sligo Pallets Premier League seen Dromore Villa do battle with Merville United at the Astro Cleveragh on Friday night in this nine-goal blitz unfortunately six of them were for Merville Utd. Stephen Feeney was the Hero for the Villa with a well taken hat trick. Graham Irwin snatched two goals for Merville with Joe Spratt, Jake Hargadon David Lynch and Jordan Muldoon all on the mark for United.

Referee Tomas Oates had two sending off’s one from each side Conor Gordon for the Villa and Jake Hargadon for Merville but despite the sending off’s it was a very good game with both sides playing an open attacking game enjoyed by the large crowd.

Sunday was to be business as usual for the front runners but someone lost the script because the results that followed were just unbelievable. First up league leaders Cliffoney Celtic at home to second from bottom Real Tubber a home banker considering that Real Tubber had also forfeited home advantage. The first half was scoreless and despite both sides playing an attacking game it looked that a shock draw was on the cards. Then eight minutes from time Jason Perry smashed home the opener for Real Tubber and in injury time added his second to capture three magnificent points for an outstanding Real Tubber.

Next up was second place Ballygawley Celtic travelling to Sean Fallon Park with a big test against third placed MCR. This game was on form going to be a close encounter and MCR were first out of the blocks with Andrew Tiernan firing them ahead. Ballygawley Celtic were pressing hard but suffered a major blow when referee Phillip Mc Loughlin gave Colm Mc Tiernan his marching orders. MCR stayed focused and Joe Cobbe emerged as the hero of the day hitting a superb hat trick to give MCR all three points and perhaps a Hugh sigh of relief to North Sligo.

Next up fourth placed Carrick Town away to ninth in the table Arrow Harps in Riverstown. The Town on form another banker but again no one told Arrow Harps Daniel Willis fired them ahead at half time with two great goals. The Town roared back in the second half and levelled matters with a goal each from Neville Murphy and Rostas Balint that should have given them a point. But Harps never say die attitude was rewarded with a quick break away seen Ciaran O Connor draw the Town keeper and unselfishly squared the ball to Daniel Willis to tap home his hat trick and all three points for a jubilant Arrow Harps, and referee Glen Gilmartin was singled out for his professional handling of the game.

Next shock was tenth placed Chaffpool United defeating in eight place Benbulben FC Hitmen for the Pool were Fergus Leonard, Mark Coen John Feeney and Dylan Fahey while Sean Durcan netted the only goal for Benbulben FC.

Last but not least shock of the day seen bottom of the table Gurteen Celtic record their first win of the season by the odd goal in seven at home to Coolaney United. The man of the match has to be Gurteen Celtic’s Niall Mc Gill who insured a tremendous result for his side when bagging a hat trick Michael Doddy added the fourth for good measure. Coolaney despite losing were magnificent in defeat Ciaran Mc Murray James Ellis and Declan Mc Cormack all on target that augers well for the future.

Manager John Loftus is nearing his final selection for his opening game in the Oscar Traynor Competition that takes place next Saturday night kick off 7pm at the Ray Mac Sharry Complex Sligo. His opponents are the very strong Inishowen League winners two seasons ago and beaten in last year’s semi-finals.
