Former Leitrim & Sligo manager PJ Carroll dies

The death has been announced of the former Leitrim and Sligo senior gaelic football manager PJ Carroll.

The Cavan native passed away, surrounded by his family, in Cavan General Hospital, on Wednesday.

A passionate and driven GAA man, Carroll is best remembered for managing Leitrim to an All-Ireland ‘B’ football championship title in 1990 (with a 2-11 to 0-2 win over Sligo in the final), as well as a Connacht under-21 title with the county the following year.

Many would argue his work with Leitrim’s senior football panel from 1989 to 1992 laid the foundation for John O’Mahony’s Connacht championship success with the county in 1994.

Carroll also took over Sligo senior gaelic footballers in 1995.

He subsequently returned to Leitrim to lead Aughavas to a senior club championship title in 2000.

There were also club championship titles successes in counties Meath and Monaghan.

His home county, of course, was his greatest passion.

A proud Cavan Gaels clubman, he managed the Cavan senior, U21 and minor county football teams at different stages in his career.

Carroll’s funeral service takes place on Friday.

The funeral arrangements are available here.
