14-man Sligo edged out by Down after extra-time

Sligo gaelic footballers produced a gallant effort in Sunday’s Tailteann Cup semi-final before being edged out by Down after extra-time, on a final scoreline of 1-20 to 2-15.

Tony McEntee’s side led by 1-6 to 0-8 at half-time, thanks to a fine Paddy O’Connor goal – but their route to victory was complicated in the second-half following a red card issued to Nathan Mullen for a high challenge on Down substitute Oisín Savage.

Canice Mulligan’s brilliantly worked second-half goal gave the Yeats me renewed hope – but with the extra man – Down managed to claw back the deficit and take the game to extra-time.

Sligo led by two points at one stage in the extra period but an Odhrán Murdock swung the pendulum back in favour of the Mourne County – and with players on both sides cramping all over the field as the final minutes of extra-time ticked away, Down were able to hold on for a two-point win.

Sligo manager Tony McEntee spoke to Ocean FM Sport after the game.

Down will now play Justin McNulty’s Laois who beat Antrim by 3-12 to 1-12 in Sunday’s first semi-final
