Speculation increases over the future of local politicians

With confirmation yesterday that the Midlands- North West constituency will be allocated an extra MEP in next year’s European Elections there is already media speculation today surrounding the future of some local Government TD’s and Ministers.

Already it’s being predicted that the Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue is being linked with a future European Commission role.

Some Political observers are predicting that the Donegal TD could  struggle to retain his seat in the next general election due to the level of compensation offered to those impacted by the mica issue and moves which will lead to a reduction in Ireland’s and Donegal’s fishing fleet.

As a result of Minister Monologue moving to Brussels the door could open for the return of the former Donegal TD, Pat “the Cope” Gallagher returning to contest the next general election campaign for Fianna Fáil.

Roscommon East Galway Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice is also being touted as possible future European candidate.

The new look Midlands North West constituency will also include Laois and Offaly.

It’s also being speculated that Laois-Offaly TD Barry Cowen will seek to become a candidate in the expanded constituency.

EU Commissioner, Mairead McGuinness has confirmed that she will not be a candidate in the European Parliament elections next June.
