Retention of two fire stations in south Donegal ‘unlikely’

The retention of two fire stations in south Donegal is looking “increasingly unlikely”.

That’s according to the Director of Services at Donegal County Council Garry Martin who made the comments at the latest sitting of the Donegal MD.

Mr. Martin says that the Council has made every effort to put forward the case for fire stations to remain in both Bundoran and Ballyshannon but it’s the view of central Government that one would serve both areas going forward and that the Governments position is unlikely to change on the matter.

The issue has been rumbling on for decades and the stations in their current state have been described as “past their sell by date”.

Mr. Martin said that the local authority cannot move forward unless a decision is made and that conclusion is needed in the interest of all concerned.

He also said that the overall service would not be impacted in the area with the closure of one of the stations.

However, Ballyshannon Fine Gael Cllr Barry Sweeney is adamant that there is a need for two and believes that there is still a way forward:

Bundoran Sinn Fein Cllr Michael McMahon says the fight isn’t over yet:
