Updated with Minister McConalogue audio: Macra members walk overnight to Dáil in protest



North West based members of Macra have taken part in a special overnight march to the Dáil.

The young farmers, including some from Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim say they are carrying a message for the future of Rural Ireland.

They’ve spent the night walking from Athy and are due to arrive at the gates of Government buildings  in a bid to highlight the challenges facing farmers and young people.

Accessing affordable housing, a lack of public transport, healthcare and rewetting proposals are among their concerns.

Galway member Shane Dolphin is one of those marching he says the north west region is most in need of rural and agricultural support:

 

 

 

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue says he’s happy to meet the Macra delegation when they arrive at Government Buildings.

He’s insisting the Government is working hard to ensure a future for young people in rural Ireland:
