Sligo Councillor urges cabinet to back new construction measures

A Sligo Councillor says plans going before cabinet today that are considering the temporary scrapping of development fees and subsidising the building of affordable housing should be given a chance to see if they will help alleviate the housing crisis in the north west.

Ministers are being asked to consider a package of measures aimed at reducing the cost of construction and increasing the pace at which derelict properties are renovated for new housing.

Development levies for housing could be abolished temporarily under plans to be considered by Cabinet.

While Grants for renovating vacant or derelict homes, will be increased to €30,000 for vacant homes and up to €50,000 for derelict homes.

Rules will also be changed to allow someone who plans to buy a vacant or derelict home to rent out to avail of the grants.

Ballymote Tubbercurry Fianna Fail Councillor Paul Taylor also works in construction he says any measures that could lead to more housing being available in the north west should be given a chance to succeed.
