Sligo survive Leitrim fightback to clinch promotion

Sligo senior gaelic footballers will play at Croke Park in a Division 4 league final next weekend after securing promotion to Division 3 on Sunday in Carrick-on-Shannon with a 2-15 to 1-11 victory over Leitrim in an enthralling league game.

Tony McEntee controlled much of this game and appeared to be cruising midway through the second-half when they led by eight points.

But the departure of Keelan Cawley (yellow card) and Pat Spillane and Paddy O’Connor through injury appeared to upset Sligo’s momentum.

Barry McNulty’s goal then sparked a dramatic Leitrim revival and the home side actually led by one in the closing moments of the game.

However, in the closing stages, Sligo showed ommendable composure to find crucial late scores to secure a one-point victory.

They now face Oisin McConville’s Wicklow in the Division 4 final after the garden county also secured promotion on Sunday.

Weekend Division 4 results
Leitrim 2-11 Sligo 1-15
