Donegal TD calls for super trawlers to be banned form Irish Waters

A Donegal TD is calling for super trawlers to be banned from fishing in Irish and EU waters.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Fisheries and the Marine, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn is making the calls as 447ft super trawler and factory ship, the FV Margiris is currently in operation in waters off the south west of Ireland.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn has previously called for super trawlers be banned from fishing in all European waters as is the case in the waters around Australia.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn has labelled the presence of the vessel in Irish waters as “a kick in the teeth for the Irish fishing industry.”
