Councillor expresses concern with low number of planning permissions granted locally

A Sligo Councillor is warning that the low number of planning permissions being granted for new houses locally will ensure that the north west could be looking at housing crisis last for a substantial period of time.

Cllr. Donal Gilroy has also warned the housing shortage will prevent skilled professionals taking up employment opportunities here.

Recent figures from the central statistics office have confirmed that planning permission was granted for 1,110 new houses in 2022.

A breakdown of the figures show the local authority in Donegal granted permission for 731 new houses.  The figure was 270 in Sligo while in Leitrim just 109 new applications were approved.

Responding to the figures the Sligo Drumcliff elected representative says these figures do little to suggest that the housing crisis is likely to ease in this region.
