Leitrim councillor pushes for tourism focus over ghost trains

A Leitrim councillor is warning that excellent tourism projects in the north west are being put in danger due to an obsession with looking to restore railway lines.

Manorhamilton Municipal District councillor Sean McDermott says that many tourists planning to visit this country and engage in active tourism activities want’ peace and quiet’ when walking on greenways and do not want to be disturbed by trains.

The Fine Gael councillor says he is baffled by why there is such a push to restore old railway lines such as the Sligo to Enniskillen route.

Cllr McDermott says it will be difficult to attract sufficient passenger numbers to make such a service viable.
