Strand Celtic into Connacht Cup 1/4 finals

Strand Celtic were the sole Sligo/Leitrim junior soccer team to reach the last eight of the Connacht Cup following a 2-0 home win against Colga FC of Galway.

Goals from Barry O’Mahoney and Caoilte Brannigan secured the victory for Strand.

Calry Bohs and Cartron United were both unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Calry lost 2-0 at Hazelwood to Castlebar Celtic, while Cartron were beaten 2-1 by NUI Galway at Ray MacSharry Park.

The quarter-final draw was due to be finalised on Monday evening.

In the Southern Hotel Super League, MCR’s relentless march towards the title continued with a 6-2 victory against Real Tubber on Saturday night.

That’s now 18 league wins from 18 games – Gary Funston’s side currently enjoy a 15-point lead over second-placed Carbury.

Further down the table, Coolaney United coach Ryan Matthews stood down from his post following Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat to bottom-of-the-table Aughanagh Celtic.
