Leitrim hurlers suffer first league defeat

Leitrim hurlers suffered their first league defeat of their Allianz League Division 3B campaign on Sunday, going down to Cavan at Kingspan Breffni on a final scoreline of 0-21 to 2-11.

The game, originally fixed for Saturday, was postponed because of the weather conditions and re-arranged for Sunday at the same venue.

Goals from Stephen Goldrick & Peter Poniard kept Leitrim just about in touch – but Cavan were the stronger team over the 70 minutes.

A missed Leitrim penalty in the closing moments scuppered any hope of Olcan Conway’s side snatching a result, which would have been scarcely deserved.

The win ensures Cavan of a place in the Division 3B league final.

Leitrim now face two games on successive weekends against Longford (one a league game – and the other a semi-final) to determine who’ll will face the Breffni men in the league decider.

Elsewhere, Donegal endured a difficult afternoon in Division 2B as they went down to Wicklow at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny by 2-24 to 0-11.

The home side missed a first-half penalty and Wicklow took control after that to eventually run out 19-point winners and move into pole position for a league final please.
