Former Tánaiste Mary Coughlan to chair women in agriculture conference

Former Tánaiste and Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan is to chair a National Dialogue on Women in Agriculture conference this week.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, will open the National Dialogue on Women in Agriculture conference which is getting underway in the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise tomorrow.

Ms Coughlan stepped back into to public life at the end of last year after being appointed Chair of the national conference on women in farming and Chair of the Donegal Executive of Fianna Fáil.

The conference will examine gender issues in farming and explore how improvements may be made with regards to gender balance into the future.

While women are said to make a significant contribution to farming in Ireland, they currently only account for 13% of all farm holders.

The outcomes of the Conference will be compiled into a report, which will feed into future policy.
