Aidan Keena leaves Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers have confirmed that striker Aidan Keena has left the club to join English League One side Cheltenham Town.

It’s reported that Cheltenham have agreed to pay a club record fee for the player although the exact figure has been disclosed.

Keena was the League of Ireland’s leading scorer last season with 18 goals and was also voted as the club’s Player of the Season for 2022.

The Mullingar native netted 21 goals for Rovers in all competitions last season.

He had already signed a contract to keep him at the Showgrounds until 2024 – but it’s understood that a clause to move cross channel was included should a suitable offer come in.

There’s been no confirmation of the transfer fee Rovers are set to receive for the player.

In a statement on Sunday, Rovers confirmed Keena’s departure.

Sligo Rovers wish to confirm the transfer of Aidan Keena to English League One side Cheltenham Town for an undisclosed fee, plus substantial add-on payments.

Keena joined the Bit O’ Red on a free transfer just over 12 months ago and had a magnificent season in 2022, scoring 21 competitive goals and finishing as top goalscorer in The League of Ireland Premier Division.

The striker quickly became a fan’s favourite and leaves the club with our best wishes for the future having captured the hearts of everyone at the club with his hard work and his goal scoring contributions.
