Sligo Councillor says firefighters strike action must be avoided

A Sligo Councillor has called on the Government to engage with the SIPTU and explore every avenue to prevent Retained Firefighters engaging in strike action.

SIPTU’s is demanding basic entitlements of structured pay and leave arrangements for Retained Firefighters.

They claim that many fire fighters can’t do basic things such as obtain mortgage approval because of the precarious nature of their income, while taking leave is also believed to be a major issue due to staff shortages.

Ballymote Tubbercurry councillor Paul Tylor says it’s vital that firefighting personnel are available at all times to respond to emergency situations such as fires, accidents and flooding issues.
