Sligo councillor calls for shortage in construction sector to be addressed



A Sligo Councillor is calling on the government to immediately address the number of young people taking up that training to take up positions in the construction sector.

 

Ballymote-Tubbercurry Councillor Paul Taylor has made the calls as it emerges that more than 50,000 construction workers will be required to meet government housing targets.

 

Those are the findings of a new report by the Department of Further and Higher Education and Skills.

 

Under the Housing for All Plan, 35,000 houses are earmarked to be built every year until 2030.

 

Councillor Taylor says that with house prices continuing to increase locally coupled with the lack of construction workers, first time buyers will struggle to get a foot on the property ladder:
