Former Pope Benedict XVI dies aged 95



Former Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has passed away, at the age of 95.

In a statement, The Vatican said the former pontiff died at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery.

He was head of the Catholic Church from April 2005 until his resignation in February 2013.

Born Joseph Ratzinger, the German began his role following the death of Pope John Paul II.

The former Archbishop of Munich was succeeded by the current Pope Francis.
