Sligo University Hospital remains under ‘significant pressure’

Sligo University Hospital remains under significant pressure as a result of high attendances along with COVID-19 and flu outbreaks at the hospital.

Latest figures show that the hospital is currently treating 32 COVID-19 positive patients, with a further 25 patients being treated for flu and four for RSV.

Restricted visitor access remains for two outbreak wards, Surgical Gynae and Medical 7. To arrange a visit to these wards, please contact the ward manager in advance.

Given the pressures on the hospital, management are appealing to the public visiting any other ward to strictly adhere to visiting times of 6-8pm.

Visitors are asked to follow all infection precaution measures.

Sligo like hospitals right around the country, is also experiencing significantly high levels of activity with large numbers of people presenting to the Emergency Departments

Many of those attending need to be admitted for ongoing treatment which is leading to pressure on bed availability.

The high levels of flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses are also impacting on bed capacity across the hospital.

These ongoing pressures are resulting in significant delays being experienced by patients in the ED who are waiting for a bed to become available on a ward.

Management say that every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home so that beds will become available for patients who need to be admitted, at the earliest opportunity.

SUH is committed to treating everyone who presents at the Emergency Departments; people who are seriously injured or ill are assessed and treated as a priority and those who do not require urgent care may be waiting longer.

People are being asked to contact their GP during normal surgery hours or the GP out of hours service, in the first instance if their health problem is not an emergency.
