Hundreds of motorists caught speeding on National Slow Down Day

Rogue motorists reached speeds of up to 147 kilometres per hour over the course of National Slow Down Day.

They were among 592 vehicles monitored by Gardai while travelling in excess of the speed limit.

One of the most notable detections locally was in Cliffoney in Sligo, where a motorist was clocked speeding at 71km in a 50km zone.

The initiative came to a close at 7am this morning but Gardai are continuing to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, road deaths and injuries, this Christmas.
