Poor uptake reported in north west for government retrofitting scheme

Local concern is being raised with the government’s new retrofitting scheme.

The Irish Examiner is reporting that under the scheme there are just 89 homes in the entire country completed from a target of 500,000.

The reports also says just 681 homes have so far been approved.

13 counties have had fewer than 10 applications, with Co Leitrim failing to record a single application.  There 59 applications for the scheme in Sligo and 62 in Donegal.

The National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme was launched earlier this year by Green Party leader Eamon Ryan.

With the full cost of a retrofit topping €80,000, the requirement to raise half of that is proving too much for families during the current cost-of-living crisis.

The lack of contractors, significant upfront costs, and an overly bureaucratic process are proving to be major barriers.

Sligo Drumcliff councillor Donal Gilroy says the figures are concerning adding that there are reasons why the scheme is not successful.
