Man arrested following incident at the home of Sligo Leitrim TD

Gardaí have arrested a man today, after a van was driven through the gates of the home of the Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny, at approximately 2am on Thursday morning.

A man in his 40s was taken to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, and was arrested this morning on suspicion of endangerment. He is currently being detained in Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station.

The Sinn Fein TD was not at home when the incident took place but it’s believed his wife was home alone.

The van narrowly missed Mr Kenny’s home and crashed into the double glass doors of a separate studio space.

It is believed the driver of the van remained at the scene and was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

In a statement to Ocean FM Deputy Kenny said that the incident was “distressing and traumatic” for his wife.

“I would like to thank the gardaí and ambulance services, who arrived quickly on the scene to deal with the incident and the driver of the vehicle,” he said.

The Sinn Féin justice spokesperson declined to comment further on the incident at this time

Martin Kenny’s own car was burned out at his home almost three years ago.

Earlier this year in an interview with Ocean FM The Sinn Fein spokeperson on justice and equality, outlined how politicians are becoming increasingly concerned for their safety.

Back in February Deputy Kenny outlined that violent incidents against politicians has increased in recent times
