A Sligo Leitrim TD says it’s beyond ridiculous that Covid is being used as an excuse for day centres in the region remaining closed.
It follows a warning that older people and their families in the North West feel forgotten and abandoned over what’s been described as a failure to fully reopen adult day centres in the region.
The issue was raised in the Dáil in recent days by Independent TD Marian Harkin to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly who agreed that the Covid excuse doesn’t wash anymore.
Speaking to OceanFM, Deputy Harkin says every avenue must be explored to ensure these centres reopen:
In a statement to Ocean FM news, the HSE say that Older Persons Services continue to restore Day Care Services throughout Community Healthcare Cavan Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Sligo (CH CDLMS) HSE services. A CH CDLMS steering group has overseen the resumption of day services in Community Healthcare Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Sligo across HSE direct, voluntary and for profit providers which began in July 2021 in line with Public Health Guidance.
To date 81% of Day Service facilities have reopened within the area. However, there are a number of Day Service facilities which require additional refurbishment work in order to ensure compliance with Infection Prevention and Control guidance.
In the interim period, during these works, additional places have been provided in alternative Day Service facilities with transport provided through Local Link or alternative if required.
In addition, increased hours for home respite have also been provided to support the individual, families and carers.
Meals on Wheels continues to be supported within the local community.
The HSE continues to work towards the full reopening of all remaining units within existing facilities or via third party providers in alternative facilities.
