Leitrim councillor calls for overhaul of the legal aid system

Calls are being made on the Taoiseach Michael Martin and Justice Minister Helen McEntee, to overhaul the legal aid system in this country.

Leitrim Councillor Justin Warnock says the system is currently not fit for purpose.

He is calling for a major overhaul of the free legal aid system adding that tens of millions of taxpayers  money is being spent on legal aid for criminal cases annually – something which he claims is being exploited by ‘career criminals’

The Kinlough based Councillor says the revolving door justice system which currently exists is to the detriment of victims and our society.

Cllr Warnock the money being spent on free legal aid is scandalous as the country battles it’s way though the cost of living crisis.
