Warnings issued to third level over accommodation fraud.



Warnings are being sounded to third-level students from the northwest in relation to accommodation fraud.

 

New figures show this type of fraud is up 30 percent on pre-pandemic levels.

 

Gardaí are appealing to students attending college locally or anywhere in the country to be cautious.

 

House hunters are told to only use trusted landlords or letting agencies and to never deal in cash.

 

So far this year 291 thousand euro has been stolen through accommodation fraud, compared to 250 thousand in 2019.

 

Speaking to Ocean FM Garda Yvonne Carolan the Juvenile Liaison officer for South Donegal says there are a number of measures students can take when it comes to paying deposits on rented accommodation.
