Sligo Rovers defeat Viking in Europa Conference League 2nd Leg

Sligo Rovers’ 2022 Europa Conference League adventure came to end despite a 1-0 victory over Viking FK of Norway in the 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg at The Showgrounds.

Last week’s 5-1 first leg defeat in Stravanger was too much to claw back for John Russell’s side in Thursday’s second leg.

Rovers limited their opponents to very few clear cut opportunities during the 90 minutes and broke the deadlock a minute from half-time.

Will Fitzgerald’s attempted cross deflected off Viking’s Sondre Bjørshol and into the back of the net.

Rovers were awarded a penalty on 73 minutes as Frank Liivak was fouled. The Estonian stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick, however Patrik Gunnarsson in the Viking goal denied him.

After the game, Sligo Rovers manager John Russell spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Ronan Flanagan:

Kailin Barlow, Sligo Rovers midfielder also gave his thoughts to Ocean FM Sport:
