Impressive Coolera/Strandhill win Sligo Division 1 league title

Coolera/Strandhill claimed the Furey’s Coaches senior men’s football league title in Sligo for the fifth time in the club’s history on Saturday evening at Markievicz Park with a comprehensive 1-16 to 0-8 victory over holders Tourlestrane.

The game was a repeat of last year’s county final, which Tourlestrane won.

But here, Coolera/Strandhill were deserving winners.

Managed again this year by Enda Mitchell and Adrian McPartland, Coolera lead their opponents by double scores (0-8 to 0-4) at half-time and they extended that advantage in the second 30 minutes to run out emphatic 11-point winners.

The club’s last league title was back in 1953.

Tourlestrane had won six of the previous seven Division 1 league titles in Sligo prior to Saturday’s decider.

The two clubs are scheduled to meet the group stages of the Homeland Sligo Senior Football Championship (Sept 11th), which begins next weekend.
