New Mica Redress Scheme signed into law

President Michael D. Higgins has signed the revised mica redress scheme into law.

The Government Bill, which will provide grants of up to €420,000 to homeowners to repair defects caused by Mica, was signed into law over the weekend.

The new scheme is set to cost €2.7bn.

Mica is thought to affect more than 7,000 homes, mainly in the North West and West of the country.

The revised scheme came under criticism from affected homeowners with some key amendments they had sought omitted from it.

Campaigners had previously said that they do not expect the scheme to be fully up and running until early next year.
