O’Donnell & English selected for World Athletics Championships

Sligo’s Christopher O’Donnell and the Donegal duo of Mark English and Brendan Boyce have all been named on an 11-strong Ireland team to compete at the forthcoming World Athletics Championships in Oregon (USA).

The Worlds run from July 15-24th.

O’Donnell, who regained his national senior 400 metres sprint title in Dublin just last weekend, will run in both the individual event and the 4×400 metres mixed relay, which was his Olympic final event in Tokyo last summer.

The North Sligo athlete is enjoying a rich vein of form at the moment, having recent improved his own personal best for the 400m.

Finn Valley clubman English, winner of a 10th national 800 metres in Santry last Sunday, will again represent Ireland over the two-lap distance in Oregon, while Boyce will be competing in the 35-kilometre walk.

The Ireland team has some notable absentees with some athletes opting to plan their summer season around the European Championships rather than the worlds.

Sprinter Phil Healy and distance runners Ciara Mageean and Fionnuala McCormack fall into this category.
