Co Sligo course record holder qualifies for Open Championship

The Galway golfer who holds the course record at Co Sligo Golf Club in Rosses Point has qualified for July’s Open Championship at St Andrew’s.

Ronan Mullarney (pictured) carded a nine-under-par 62 at Co Sligo during the 2019 Flogas Irish Amateur Open, beating the previous record held by his friend David Brady (Co Sligo).

On Tuesday, Mullarney was one of 16 amateur golfers to secure a place in the prestigious Open field after a gruelling qualifying process.

Mullarney tied for second at Prince’s course in Kent on three-under after scores of 70 and 71.

Dublin’s David Carey also qualifed – but there was disappointment for Co Sligo’s Thomas Finnegan, who didn’t manage to get through the final qualifying phase on Tuesday.

The Open Championship takes place at St Andrew’s in Scotland on July 14-17th  – and is celebrating its 150th anniversary.

There will seven Irish golfers in the field, with Mullarney and Carey joining Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Seamus Power, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke at St Andrew’s.
