Rovers defender Pijnaker misses out on World Cup finals

There was disappointment for Sligo Rovers New Zealand-born defender Nando Pijnaker on Tuesday night in Qatar where the Kiwis lost 1-0 to Costa Rica in the their World Cup play-off.

The result sends Costa Rica to the finals later this year in Qatar.

New Zealand dominated the majority of Tuesday night’s goal but were unable to find an equaliser after falling behind to Costa Rica’s in the third minute of the contest.

Pijnaker played the full 90 minutes – and must now jet back to Ireland to rejoin the Sligo Rovers squad, who are preparing for the resumption of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season this Saturday night, when they welcome Finn Harps to the Showgrounds.

Saturday’s game will be live in full on Ocean FM from 7:45pm.
