Sligo-Leitrim and Donegal make winning starts to Kennedy Cup



The Sligo-Leitrim and Donegal boys under-14 representative soccer teams made winning starts to the 2022 Kennedy Cup at the University of Limerick on Monday afternoon.

Sligo-Leitrim, who part of a four-team Group 8 alongside Limerick District, Limerick County and NECSL, began their campaign with a 3-2 victory over NECSL (North Eastern Counties Schoolboys League) on Monday afternoon. The Sligo-Leitrim goals were scored by Ryan O’Donoghue and a Jack Nicholson brace.

Donegal, meanwhile are in Group 3 alongside Dundalk, Drogheda and Lisburn Castlereagh

Goals from Peter Sweeney and Corey Monaghan secured victory for Donegal in a 2-1 defeat of Lisburn Castlereagh in the opening game.

The prestigious Kennedy Cup tournament features 32 inter-league teams from across the island of Ireland.

Former Ireland internationals Roy Keane, Damien Duff and John O’Shea all played at the Kennedy Cup. Keane was captain of the victorious Cork side in 1984.
