Gavin Peers announces retirement from football

Former Sligo Rovers defender Gavin Peers has announced he’s hanging up his boots after a 20-year playing career, which saw him win every major honour in the League of Ireland, most of them with Sligo Rovers FC.

Peers, who’s 36 years of age, made the announcement on Social Media on Monday afternoon.

“All good things must come to an end; after 20 years of playing, I am hanging up the boots. A big thanks to all the managers and players I’ve played for and alongside,” Peers said in his online post.

“I have made friends for life along the way and had many great experiences. I couldn’t have done it all without the support of my wife and family around me and they deserve so much thanks.”

The bulk of Peers’ career was spent with Rovers.

During 11 seasons at the Showgrounds, he won the SSE Airtricity League Title in 2012, The EA Sports Cup in 2010, The Setanta Sports Cup in 2014 along with FAI Cups in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

He subsequently played with St Patrick’s Athletic, Derry City, Glentoran (where he won an Irish Cup) and Warrenpoint Town.

Peers plans to stay involved with football and will be working with the Republic of Ireland under-15 international team, in a coaching capacity.
