Donegal International Rally to celebrate 50th anniversary

The 2022 Joule Donegal International Rally will return to the roads of Tir Chonnaill next month after a two-year pandemic enforced absence.

This year’s event will run from June 17th to 19th.

Donegal Motor club chairman Brian Brogan is looking forward to welcoming competitors and fans alike.

“The rally is an integral part of Donegal tourism, it brings a minimum of 25 million euros to the local economy, already every hotel and bed and breakfast in the county is full,” he said.

“This rally sets the standard that other rallies across the country aspire to, that is down to the team involved but also, the warm welcome extended by the local community.”

Late Donegal rallying legend Manus Kelly will be remembered at this year’s rally.

The three-time Donegal international Rally winner was killed while competing on day three of the Donegal International Rally in June, 2019.

The winning crew in 2022 will be presented with the Manus Kelly Memorial Award.

Eamon McGee is again the Clerk of the Course and is looking forward to the event.

“This year sees a mix of classic stages and some stages that have been tweaked and improved since last being used.

“We are starting 161 cars in the main field plus up to 25 historic entries and 25 junior competitors.

Entries opened on Thursday May 11th and close on Thursday May 25th.

The main field will enjoy twenty stages giving them over 300 competitive kilometres over the three days.
