Leitrim draw with Roscommon, Sligo lose to Mayo

An injury-time goal from Paul Honeyman earned Leitrim minor gaelic footballers a dramatic 1-13 to 1-13 draw with Roscommon in Friday evening’s Connacht minor football championship game in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Adrian Dockery’s side appeared to be heading for defeat as the match ticked towards full-time after Robert Henehan goaled for Roscommon in the closing moments.

However, the home side responded with Honeyman’s goal and, then a point from the same player in added time and another from Dara Greenan to snatch a draw.

In Ballina, Sligo were beaten by an impressive Mayo team by 2-21 to 3-10 in an entertaining and high-scoring game.

Two first-half goals from Eli Rooney and Tommy Ross were highlights for Sligo but, playing against the breeze, they found themselves trailing at half-time by 2-12 to 2-5 with the impressive Mayo duo of Ronan Clarke (scorer of 0-9) and James Hurley causing Sligo several problems at the back.

Sligo were unable to make meaningful headway into the May lead in the second-half.

A Cian Carty goal briefly narrowed the gap to four points but Mayo always looked capable of a response at the other end as they eased to an eight-point victory.
