MacSharry in fiery exchanges with Robert Watt at Oireachtas hearing

There were fiery exchanges at today’s Oireachtas Health Committee meeting between Fianna Fail Deputy, Marc MacSharry and the Department of Health, Secretary, Robert Watt.

Mr Watt had told the hearing that they were ‘bounced into’ announcing the secondment of Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan to Trinity College before they were ready.

Robert Watt has argued the Health Minister would have been fully informed on the issue when more details were settled.

Mr Watt was accused of overstepping the mark and signing off on the move without ministerial go-ahead, at a cost of 2 million euro a year.

Deputy MacSharry challenged him forcefully on that, saying the situation was scandalous, before abruptly leaving the hearing
